This volume presents the proceedings of the fifth workshop of the international thematic network ‚Impact of Empire’, which concentrates on the history of the Roman Empire, c. 200 B.C. - A.D. 476, and, under the chairmanship of Lukas de Blois and Olivier Hekster (University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands), brings together ancient historians, archaeologists, classicists and specialists on Roman law from some 28 European and North American universities. The fifth volume focuses on the impact of imperial Rome on religions, ritual and religious life in the Roman Empire. The following topics are treated: connections between Roman expansion and religion, the imperial impact on local cults, cultic personnel (priests, priestesses and bishops), and the divinity of Roman Emperors.

Rondom euthanasie en andere vormen van levensbeëindigende handelen zijn nog veel vragen onbeantwoord gebleven. Wat bedoelen we met euthanasie - bestaat er in deze een onderscheid tussen (actief) doden en laten sterven en is dat onderscheid moreel relevant? Bij welke aandoeningen en in welke situaties passen artsen euthanasie doorgaans toe? Zijn er in zulke situaties aanvaardbare alternatieven? Dit boek bespreekt delicate onderscheidingen en vele dilemma's en vraagstukken op dit terrein. De verschillende hoofdstukken in dit boek bieden op vraagstukken rondom euthanasie steeds een eigen perspectief: juridisch, medisch, theologisch en ethisch. Daarbij wordt onder meer ingegaan op het morele principe van respect voor autonomie, een verworvenheid waar de Nederlandse gezondheidszorg trots op is. Wat betekent autonomie in situaties waarin mensen verregaand afhankelijk zijn van anderen? Strekt autonomie zich ook uit tot een recht op euthanasie? En hoe verhoudt autonomie zich tot andere morele beginselen? In de beantwoording van deze vragen zoeken de auteurs aansluiting bij de christelijke traditie. Dit boek geeft een overzicht van de ontwikkelingen op dit gebied van de afgelopen decennia; een gedegen bespreking van wat de verschillende vormen van levensbeëindigend handelen inhouden; een heldere analyse over hoe de acceptatie van euthanasie maatschappelijke gevolgen heeft en ingrijpt in de inhoud van het medische beroep. Bij de bespreking van dit onderwerp hebben de auteurs voor ogen gehouden dat dit aan een van de teerste zaken van ons leven raakt - het sterven van de mens.
